Bursa & Bursitis

Shoulder bursa

A bursa is a closed, fluid-filled sac whose function is to cushion and provide a gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body. The major bursae are located adjacent to tendons near large joints such as in the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. When the bursa becomes inflamed the condition is known as bursitis. Once the bursa is inflamed normal movements and activities can become very painful.

Bursitis may be caused by injury or prolonged over-use / repetitive motion of a joint. Gout, infections, poor posture and arthritis can also bring on the condition. Sometimes, however, the cause of bursitis is simply unknown. Bursitis is most common in women and in middle-aged or elderly people. Approximately 1 in 31 Americans (almost 9 million people!) are affected by this disorder.

Immediate treatment for bursitis is required to prevent futher damage and the accumulation of scar tissues, which compund the pain and the problem. In addition to drug therapies, healthy eating and total rest of the affected area successful pain management and accelarated healing may be experienced with regular MendMeShop Ultrasound treatments.
